Emeritus Professor Marjory Ebbeck and research associate Wendy Toh of the SEED Institute explain why outdoor play is key to the well-being of young children. Also, they provide outdoor play ideas for both parents and educators.
Even in Singapore's built-up urban environment, outdoor play is essential.
Running, jumping, climbing, stretching and balancing support not only children’s physical health but also their social and emotional well-being. Plus, research suggests that outdoor play can delay the onset of myopia among children.
As long as children drink plenty of water and are appropriately-attired (e.g., with sun hats) they can safely engage in a wide range of outdoor activities.
For instance, parents and guardians might like to:
Take a weekend walk—or bike ride—around the neighbourhood. The June holiday break is the perfect time to do this!
Pay attention to the questions children have about nature and the environment. Discuss why natural spaces need protection.
Snap photos of outdoor experiences to revisit at a later date. These images will help bring back happy memories and allow children the opportunity to use new vocabulary.
Head to the beach. Sand and seashells are ideal construction materials. Children might like to sort the shells by shape, size or colour.
Go to playgrounds, parks and gardens. Some options include Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden at Singapore Botanic Gardens, Hindhede Nature Park and Bollywood Veggies.
And early childhood educators can:
Facilitate unstructured exploration of the various textures, colours and shapes of leaves, flowers and other nature features in the environment.
Engage in ball play, and throw or run after both handmade and store-bought balls.
Plan treasure hunts. Educators can hide suitable objects and provide children with clues as to where they are hidden.
Have children walk, run and jump between ropes outdoors.
Create challenging obstacle courses.
Take some “indoor activities”—like drawing or reading—outdoors.
Enjoy picnics outdoors. Children can help to prepare simple food like fruit and sandwiches.
Movement and physical activity can be great fun. Really, the options are endless.
